The new building is situated on a ridge on the edge of the hospital park in the beautiful surroundings formed by the old manor landscape at Lade. There is a magnificent open view of the scenery, Ringvebukta and the edge of the forest in the east.
The project emphasizes quality and diversity in materials and colours, as well as security measures being integrated in the design and minimally visible. The use of glass walls and a clear and simple layout provides secure and mutual visibility between staff and patients.
The premises are spacious, the patients have access to peace and quiet in private rooms with bath as well as various degrees of social life in common areas such as dining room, lounge and activity room. Nature and daylight are drawn into the building through large windows and glass areas, and artificial light is varied throughout the day. The interior surfaces are light with natural colours and materials.
The construction consists of precast concrete elements and cast-in-place concrete. The fronts are covered in brick carefully selected to adapt to the existing buildings, and for the building to give a subdued impression in the landscape.
In the summer of 2022, the project was named the winner of the European Healthcare Design Awards 2022
The jury's argument said:
"A mental health project that, through innovative design thinking,
achieves a reconciliation between the needs of the patient/resident for a
humanistic environment that supports ongoing therapy, care and
recovery, and the requirement for appropriate levels of safety, security
and supervision."
The project is completed in collaboration with Karlsson Arkitekter, NCC, COWI, Schønherr for St. Olavs Hospital and Sykehusbygg
